The Department of Ophthalmology was established in the year 1948 by Dr G S Waghlesoon after UG and PG course started. Pioneer surgeons like Dr. D. Dheer, squint surgeonand Dr.R P Dhande, keratoplasty specialist have given valuable services through this Department.

From the era of loop ocular Examination and Surgery, the Department has progressed towards latest diagnostic and therapeutic advancements.

The current head of the Department is Dr. (Prof.) Preeti Rawat, and other faculties are Dr. (Prof.) Vijay Bhaisare, Dr. (Prof.) Shweta Walia, Dr. Neetu Kori, Dr. Manushree Gautam, Dr. Niharika Arya, Dr. Niti Gupta. Department is actively engaged in undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and training. Department regularly organizes CME and workshops with national and state level faculties.

The Department is equipped with modern instruments like advanced Phacoemulsification machine, Retinal lasers, Optical coherence tomography, Fundus fluorescein angiography, Fundus camera, Specular Microscopy, autorefractometer, keratometer, tonometer, ophthalmoscope, slit lamp biomicroscope, retinoscope etc. And successfully giving speciality services like in Oculoplasty, Cornea, glaucoma, retina and Retinopathy of prematurity.

Department also runs effectively fully functional eye bank for more than 30 years and is actively undertaking eye donations and keratoplasty regularly.

Faculties and Post graduate students are engaged in various research and other curriculum activities like blindness control program, Refractive error related eye heath checkup in camps, glaucoma awareness program, cornea retrieval and keratoplasty program which are regularly published in prestigious papers.
