Established in 1986, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology has been integral to both academic activities and medico-legal services at the institution. The department has been led by eminent faculty members:

• Dr. Banu Prasad Dubey (1986 - 1989)
• Dr. R.K. Singh (1989 - 2002)
• Dr. S.K. Dadu (2002 - 2018)
• Dr. P.S. Thakur (2018 - 2024)
• Dr. B.K. Singh (2024 - present)

The department provides comprehensive education in the subject of forensic medicine and toxicology to MBBS students during their second and third-1 professional years, with an annual intake of 250 students. It also offers postgraduate training to four residents of M.D. (Forensic Medicine) course each year.

In addition to its academic activities, the department conducts medico-legal autopsies and provides expert opinions for legal proceedings. Faculty members regularly serve as expert witnesses in court and as members of the various Medico-Legal boards, contributing in justice delivery system.
